"Catch the Reading Bug" - Summer Reading Program

Henderson Libraries is looking for a few good bookworms to "Catch the Reading Bug" as the 2008 Summer Reading Program begins Saturday, June 14. The Libraries' annual program offers incentives for children reading independently and those who are read-to by adults. Additionally, the libraries offer "Metamorphosis @ Your Library" for teens and "Don't Bug Me, I'm Reading" for adults.

 

While reading is rewarding all year long, summer reading participants may receive prizes at different levels of accomplishment. This year program prizes for children include temporary tattoos, stickers, slap bracelets, a swim pass to Henderson Parks & Recreation pools, a free book of choice, one free Shark Reef Aquarium pass and a chance to win a family four-pack to Circus Circus Hotel-Casino's Adventuredome. Teens also qualify for an Adventuredome family four-pack grand prize, but they will also receive various incentives such as water bottles, cricket suckers, books and mood pencils. As a grand prize, adults have a chance at winning a Pink Jeep Tour and a Custom REI Bike.  People of all ages are encouraged to sign up for the free program either online at www.mypubliclibrary.com or at one of the Henderson Libraries.

 

The Summer Reading Program lasts from June 14 through August 9 and library events are planned all summer long including a special kick-off event with a "Bounce House," and several children's activities at 9 a.m. on June 14 at the Paseo Verde (280 S. Green Valley Parkway) and at 12 p.m. at the James I. Gibson (280 S. Water Street) branches of the library. A similar event is planned at 2 p.m. at the Lydia Malcolm branch - located at 2960 Sunridge Heights Parkway - on June 13.

National Night Out 2008

The City of Henderson Police Department will be partnering with the City of Henderson Department of Cultural Arts and Tourism, the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department, and other local organizations and businesses to produce a National Night Out Block Party, on Tuesday August, 5, 2008 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The event will be held at the Henderson Events Plaza, located at 200 S. Water Street, located in downtown Henderson within the Water Street District.  Plans include a live band, food and beverages, crime and fire prevention booths, and other crime prevention activities. This is a free event.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals that the residents are organized and will fight back.
