Moms on the Move

(Icons/Graphics) ZenWoman.jpgWe want to support and acknowledge moms. Each of you is making a difference whether you are a stay at home mom, working mom, or volunteer mom. When you become a mom, it is often easy to forget the side of you that is also a woman who may have had a career, hobbies and education before you became a parent. As a mom we spend our days multi-tasking and juggling. We are now the CEO of our households. Our job description includes diapers, dishes, carpooling, and an endless amount of laundry. Overnight you go from being a woman with style to someone who is happy to just get a shower. Being a mom is wonderful but it is also important to have a sense of yourself outside of your family.

This page is for you. Give us feedback on what you would like to see by emailing info@vegasparent.com. Check back often because this page will change monthly.

Fun Q & A with our Spotlight Mom:

Personal:

What phrase or motto do you live by?

Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead

Inspiration:

I am inspired by seeing what is possible.

If you could teach your kids one thing and have it impact them, what would it be?

My kids understand and appreciate the value of volunteerism. They have watched me volunteer with different many different organizations over the years and now I proudly watch them volunteer and explore how they can make a difference in the lives of others.

How do you measure success?

I use the quote attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson; "To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

Greatest Accomplishment:

I worked very hard to help get a law passed in the Nevada Legislature in 2001. This was the Safe Haven Law that allows women to legally abandon an unwanted newborn baby at a police station, fire station or hospital. I also created the original public service announcement and campaign. In 2003 I was given the opportunity to hold the first baby legally abandonded in the state of Nevada. This was an amazing feeling and I was thrilled to be a small part of this new family!

Biggest Challenge:

Being diagnosed with Celiac disease 5 years ago. I am unable to digest gluten which is found in wheat, barley and rye and is in most processed foods. Learning to live gluten-free has been very difficult and now I help others learn how to cope.

Wildest Dream:

To put a book in the hand of every child in Nevada

Sport/Exercise Program:

I have started playing Wii Fit and I am really enjoying it. I have the record in hula hoop in my house!

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

Tell us about a product or item that you can't live without as a parent

my husband! Because my job requires me to travel, he is my rock that keeps things going when I am out of town, provided I put everything on the calendar
